Ashtakavarga (BAV & SAV)अष्टकवर्ग

A point-based system that scores how much support each zodiac sign receives from each planet, building up to a total strength map across all 12 signs — used heavily for timing transits (a favorable transit through a high-scoring sign is stronger than the same transit through a low-scoring one).

In practice

Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) shows one planet's individual point-map across all 12 signs (0-8 points each); Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) sums all planets' contributions together into a single combined map per sign (out of a maximum 337 total points across all signs) — SAV is what most astrologers check first when judging whether a transit through a particular sign will go well.

How it's calculated

Each of the 7 classical planets "casts a vote" (1 point or 0) for each of the 12 signs, based on a fixed classical rule specific to that planet — counted from 8 different reference points (the 7 planets plus the Lagna itself), hence "Ashtaka" (eight) in the name.
