Maghaमघा

Magha is the tenth Nakshatra (0°–13°20' Simha), symbolized by a royal throne and ruled by the Pitrs (ancestral spirits). Its Yoni (compatibility animal) is Rat, its Gana is Rakshasa, and its Nadi is Antya (Kapha).

In practice

Magha is explicitly on this app's unfavorable list for Griha Pravesh (housewarming) and is not on the favorable list for any of the other three Muhurat Search activities (vehicle purchase, property purchase, new job) — Muhurat Search will flag it as a negative factor specifically for housewarming, despite Magha's classical association with authority and lineage described below.

How it's calculated

Magha's Visha Ghati begins at the 30th ghati (of 60) — roughly the midpoint of the Nakshatra's span.

Ruling deity and general temperament are drawn from classical Vedic astrology texts — sources broadly agree Magha is associated with authority, ancestry, and royal/ceremonial dignity (via the Pitrs and its "throne" symbol), which coexists in classical muhurta literature with its separate Rakshasa-Gana/inauspicious-for-housewarming classification; these are two distinct classical attributions, not a contradiction, but the relative weight given to each varies by text and by which use-case (personality reading vs. activity-timing) is being discussed.
Ruling deity and symbol

Magha is ruled by the Pitrs, the spirits of ancestors, reflecting its association with lineage, inheritance, and honoring those who came before. Its symbol is a royal throne, representing authority and status earned through heritage. Its ruling planet (Nakshatra lord, used in Vimshottari Dasha sequencing) is Ketu.

General temperament

Classical texts associate Magha with authority, pride, and a strong connection to family lineage and tradition — people with a strong Magha influence are traditionally described as commanding, respectful of hierarchy and ancestry, and drawn to positions of leadership or ceremonial responsibility.

Naming syllables (Muhurta Chintamani)

Per the traditional naming-syllable table this app uses for the Baby Names feature, a child born under Magha's four Padas is traditionally named starting with "Ma", "Mi", "Mu", or "Me" respectively.
