D9 Navamshaनवांश

The single most important divisional chart after the main D1 — divides each sign into 9 parts and is used specifically to examine marriage, spouse, and one's deeper spiritual/dharmic path. A planet's strength in the Navamsha is classically considered nearly as important as its strength in the main chart.

In practice

Used heavily in marriage compatibility analysis (see the Navamsha 7th House Insight entry in the Partner Signs glossary) and to judge whether a planet that looks weak in D1 actually has hidden strength ("Vargottama" — when a planet lands in the same sign in both D1 and D9, considered a significant boost).

How it's calculated

Each 30° sign is divided into 9 equal 3°20' parts (Navamshas); a fixed classical rule maps each Navamsha number to a specific zodiac sign, differing depending on whether the original sign is movable, fixed, or dual in nature.
